While the first draw hunt started and ended in the same month, the second search got underway in February. There will be two lotteries, each lasting twelve days, in which non-Lanai residents may participate with restricted options. It’s crucial to remember that unanticipated events can cause adjustments, postponements, or cancellations to the Lānaʻi Axis deer activities.
Participants are required to register at the specified checkpoint both at the start and finish of their activities and submit pertinent information about their efforts. After using up all allocated or assigned IDs, participants will lose their eligibility for the remaining Lānaʻi Axis Deer Season for the year.
Hawaii Deer Season
There is an online application process for interested parties, and each registration costs $10. A game animal tag must be purchased by participants at check-in for hunting activities. Hawaii residents will pay $20 for each tag, while out-of-state visitors will pay $125. Credit cards, debit cards, or cash may all be used for payment. Applicants must carefully read all the notifications and instructions supplied in order to keep informed and prevent any possible changes to the application process or the events themselves, including the possibility of adjustments, rescheduling, or cancellations.

Bag Limit
Three (3) Axis Deer may be taken during the season. Two (2) of the three deer must be done, and one (1) of this may be either sex. Hunters must first buy two (2) doe tags before buying either sex tag. Additional doe tags might be offered at the Lānaʻi hunting check station based on overhead survey data and population goal levels, but all advance bands must first be bought. The only search for which a tag is legitimate is the one for which it was given. Tags cannot be transferred.
Regulations
- Participants in this search must be 15 years of age or lower, have a valid State of Hawaii game license, and be escorted by an adult who does not shoot but has a valid license. To take part in the search, young shooters must apply.
- Youth can either buy their permits online or receive them at check-in. The search they have registered is the only chase for which the marks are legitimate. In the shooting region, young hunters are only permitted to bring one kind of hunting gear, and they must don bright orange alongside the escorting adult.
- Youth can register for and participate in the archery search and the muzzleloader or general rifle hunt. One adult may join one juvenile on this quest. Youths must complete a separate registration for each search they desire.
- The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife will begin accepting web applications for the Lānaʻi Axis Deer and Mouflon Sheep hunting season on January 10. Must pay a $10 non-refundable entry fee. At hunter check-in, Hawaiʻi citizens pay $20 for Axis deer and Mouflon sheep tags, while non-residents pay $125.
- All Federal, State, and County Covid-19 restrictions/guidelines must be followed. Must obey CDC rules. Applicants must read the hunt notice and instruction page and update and check online for changes to the application process.
- No reserve hunting chances will be available for the four hunts: archery, youth, muzzleloader, and general rifle. Each of the four hunts will be determined by a random drawing. The application/permit card for drawn hunts will arrive in the mail and include the date of their selection.
- Only hunters who are elderly citizens (age 65 or higher) or handicapped may bring a helper along with them as long as the required paperwork is shown when the hunter checks in.
- Youth must be 15 or younger and escorted by a non-hunting adult with a legal State license. To hunt, they must file for tags.
- Youth must wear flash orange and bring one hunting item.
- Youth who submit for the youth hunt can also apply for the bow, muzzleloader, or general gun hunts.
- Hunters can only apply for one of the Muzzleloaders or General Rifle Hunts. Both hunts have eight participants. The Muzzleloader Hunt date will be given immediately. A raffle will determine General Rifle Hunt days.
Application
For the 2024 Lānaʻi Axis Deer and Mouflon Sheep Season, hunters must submit their applications online at https://gohunthawaii.ehawaii.gov.
At the DOFAW Maui headquarters yard in Kahului, public lotteries for the archery, junior, muzzleloader, and general rifle contests will be conducted. To verify their hunter licenses and obtain their tags, eligible partakers must check in at the DOFAW office in Lanai City on the Tuesday before their shooting date or from Wednesday through Friday.
The OuterSpatial Trails and Hunting smartphone program allows hunters to check in and record their catch, and bands can be ordered online at https://gohunthawaii.ehawaii.gov/public/tags. The Lānaʻi hunter check station will still let hunters check-in and purchase tags, but once allotted tags have been used, they are no longer permitted to hunt during the remaining days of the Lānaʻi Axis Deer and Mouflon Sheep Season. Units 1, 2, and 3 will be open for the Archery Hunt, and Units 1 and 2 will be available for the Youth, Muzzleloader, and General Rifle Hunting Seasons from Wednesday through Sunday.
